It is located west of Kythira, in the traditional and preserved settlement of Mylopotamos Kato Chora. It is a Venetian castle built in 1565 due to its strategic location and to protect the villagers from pirates. Inside it numbered many houses and churches and was inhabited until the 50s. Some of them are preserved today, some in good condition, which creates for many visitors the feeling of being transported to the past. Inside the castle there are 9 churches, of excellent architecture that belong to the 16th – 17th century, and they are Panagia Mesosporitissa, Prophet Elias, Saint Athanasios, Saint John the Theologian, Saints Anargyroi, Saint Nikolaos, Saint All Saints, Saint John Prodromos, and Saint Demetrius. The sunset from the west side of the castle is considered the most beautiful of Kythira with a view of the Ionian Sea.
